The wardrobe of the series helps further define each character’s power, and can track how their personalities and journeys change over time. The costumes are, of course, visually stunning, but they also tell a story, with textiles and patterns instead of words.
Despite the fact that it is a prequel, House of the Dragon began to assert itself as a stand-alone show. And the costume design played a part in that.
House of the Dragon is a spin-off of the acclaimed series Game of Thrones. Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen.

She is best known for her work on six of the eight Harry Potter films, each of which earned her a Saturn Award nomination. She received the Costume Designer's Guild Award in 2012 for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Part 2" and in 2013 for 007: Skyfall Coordinates.
The main source of inspiration for "Dragon House" was the Renaissance and ancient Byzantium.
Another reason Temime looked to the time period was “the use of their gold.” Throughout the season, all the main characters are drenched in gold with their necklaces, headpieces, brooches, rings, and all sorts of royal regalia. It was important to think about the Byzantine time, because the gold means power. The rubies and the emeralds as well — everything means wealth.

I thought of the Byzantine [era] because it’s the very early days of the medieval times. That inspired me, since House of the Dragon is set two hundred years before Game of Thrones.

Jany Temime created distinct groups of gems, materials, shapes, and levels of detail specific to the character’s identity, class, status, wealth.
Rhaenyra, for example, doesn’t wear ornate jewelry when we first meet her. Just small, simple maroon or scarlet gem drop earrings encircled in gold. She wears a slightly more ornate version of that earring to the tourney.

Alicent’s accessories change once she prepares to marry the King.
When we first meet Alicent in Episode 1, she wears a sky-blue linen gown, with a gathered-neck chiffon shift underneath. But then she’s drafted, by her father, into possibly marrying Viserys. On the eve of her betrothal to him, Alicent wears a deep-blue silk gown, with a ladder cutout along the neck and up and down the sleeves.
Alicent becomes more covered up so that by the end, it’s a high neck. She also becomes a woman of the church, whatever that church is, so we see the seven-pointed star.
In the last few episodes, Queen Alicent always wears a seven-pointed star: she wears two necklaces adorned with this star, one large and one small.
This is a reference to the typical character traits of Alicent, who is pious and believes in her righteousness, though in reality is more prone to sanctimony.

Colors play a huge role in the George R.R. Martin universe. Each family of stature is identified with their own sigils and colors.
Red and black signify the colors of House Targaryen, while blue and gray are those of House Velaryon. The color assignments are so distinct, its led fans to choose their side of the budding war between Alicent’s side of the family and Rhaenyra’s as “Team Green,” and “Team Black.”
Associated with the history of her house, the beacon of the high tower glows green when Alicent’s native Oldtown sounds the alarm for war.
Color theory
When Alicent is first married and being a nice wife before she discovered that lots of things are rotten in her kingdom, she is dressed up in black and red as a queen.
After a young Alicient Hightower is wed to King Viserys Targaryen, she often is seen in her husband’s family colors.
After she is betrayed and completely alone, she enters Rhaenyra’s wedding celebration late, and in a significant emerald green gown.

The black and red signify House Targaryen, with gold lining and patterns that make the outfit appear lighter and regal. He also wears a gold and silver crown with the Targaryen sigil on it.

However, Viserys' outfit having such strong Targaryen influence also serves his tragedy. This is the outfit he wears in celebration of his wife and newborn child, and it's also what he wears when they both die because of his decisions.

House Velaryon of Driftmark have their own color palette. They are sea people, so the colors of Corlys Velaryon’s house are grey and grey-blue. His wife, Rhaenys Targaryen , wears the grey and blue colors of her husband most of the time, but when she goes to family things, she’s a Targaryen [wearing] red and black.

the trick jany used is that
she didn’t design the costumes
[in linear order] one, two, three, four. she designed a journey. All of these
characters had journeys, and she had to define
what that was for each of them.
It doesn’t just protect him — it also sort of looks like him. The tourney armor has a helmet that is carved and shaped into a dragon, with red gems for eyes, wings outstretched. It’s menacing and attractive, like the man himself.

design
For an ordinary knight, the armor resembles traditional medieval designs. But for someone like Daemon, who loves standing out, the armor he wears at the tourney is gorgeous.
Ser Criston Cole makes a big first impression in "House of the Dragon" as a participant in King Viserys' tournament. His armor is far from flashy, composed of dirtied, dented plates and an equally scuffed helmet. He also uses a very basic shield, and a nondescript flail is his weapon of choice. This costume matches Cole’s background: he’s the lowborn son of House Cole, which serves under House Dondarrion. He was knighted by a member of the Dondarrion family after fighting in Dorne.
Once he becomes a member of the Kingsguard Ser Criston loses his damaged, well-worn armor and gains shiny, new Kingsguard armor. The costume change shows just how far this lowborn knight has come, trading in his used armor for something that gives him a new status.
But when he is in battle, Daemon swaps this more showman-like armor for something much tougher and more practical, because he needs to come out of that alive

Another very memorable armored look came in the second-to-last episode of the season when Princess Rhaenys emerged on dragon wearing a silver, black, and red breastplate.
Well, I wanted something powerful but feminine. And I had two female armor moments that were important. The first one is the one of Rhea, who was Daemon’s wife, that was killed. Rhaenys’ armor is much stronger because Rhaenys is a much bigger and strong character. I wanted to give her a more important armor, and I needed the shoulder for the cape.
